Emma-Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree by Lauren Tarshis is one of those books that sneaks up on you while you are reading it. I tried to read it a few months ago, but didn't get past the first chapter. I tried again and read the whole thing in one sitting. And I'm so glad I did. It is now one of my *favorite* books! And I'm excited to hear that there will be a sequel, EMMA-JEAN LAZARUS FELL IN LOVE.
Emma-Jean is different from the other seventh grade girls. She uses her quick wits and brains, not tears and whining to solve problems. And when she finds out that Colleen Pomerantz has a problem, Emma-Jean wants to solve it. When that problem is solved, Emma-Jeans decides to solve more problems, until she gets into trouble. She does indeed fall out of a tree, but she ends up with some sweet friends.
From KidsRead.com: EMMA-JEAN LAZARUS FELL OUT OF A TREE is a delightful and insightful book about being different, dealing with bullies and overcoming grief. The voices of Emma-Jean, Colleen and Will are fresh and engaging. I hope that Lauren Tarshis will write more stories about these likable characters and their middle-school adventures.

And with a name like Emma Jean - I'd have to like that girl.
